First steps to update Barbados' contribution to the Paris Agreement on climate change
Earlier this year, OCA Global's Consulting and Technical Advice division was selected to support the government of Barbados to update its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement on climate change. The project is financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) NDC Invest program and led by the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification of Barbados, and it is expected to run until September 2020.
During the first half of June, our team conducted the first of three large rounds of stakeholder consultations. Known as NDC Dialogue 1, it involved about 100 of the country’s foremost experts, including members of the Government, the IDB and other development partners, and representatives from across all sectors.
Across the three sessions, the first Dialogue was held virtually due to the COVID-19 crisis. Our key experts, both local and international, presented their assessment of the challenges and opportunities, as well as the needs across sectors, such as energy, transport, water resources, waste, tourism, agriculture, coastal zone and disaster risk management.
The discussions with experts were lively and yielded many new insights, proving it is indeed possible to meaningfully work with all stakeholders through a virtual enhancement process, designed by our stakeholder engagement team.
OCA Global, in conjunction with the government and the IDB, will continue its work towards an ambitious update of the Barbados NDC to align the Paris Agreement targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and with the national objectives, needs and priorities of the country.
