ISO/IEC 25000

What is it?

The ISO/IEC 25000 standard provides a guide for the use of the new series of international standards known as SQuaRE – Software Product Quality Requirements and Evaluation.

These standards establish criteria for the specification of quality requirements on software products, their metrics, and their evaluation, and include a quality model to unify the definitions of customer quality with the attributes in the development process. SQuaRE is made up of the following divisions:

  • ISO / IEC 2500n. Quality Management Division.
  • ISO / IEC 2501n. Quality Model Division.
  • ISO / IEC 2502n. Quality Measurements Division.
  • ISO / IEC 2503n. Quality Requirements Division.
  • ISO / IEC 2504n. Quality Evaluation Division.
  • ISO / IEC 25050-25099. Extension Division.

The standard establishes three views to determine the quality of the product: first, an internal view to examine the properties of the software is carried out; secondly, an external view that analyses the behaviour of the software while functioning is performed; and lastly, the view in use is conducted to measure the effectiveness of the software. Once these steps have been executed, the product's quality characteristics are established in terms of its efficiency, usability, reliability, functionality, portability, and maintenance.

ISO/IEC 25000

Who is it for?

It is aimed at software development companies, regardless of their size or volume. It also applies to companies that internally create their own software tools to develop their business.

The certification of the quality of the software product with ISO/IEC 25000 is directly related to the maturity of the software development processes in ISO/IEC 15504-SPICE. Both certifications are complementary; they close and cover the whole software quality cycle. An organisation with both certifications will ensure the quality of its development processes and the quality of the resulting product.
